Getting Started
I just purchased this software but I'm a little lost. Where do I start?
Firstly, congratulations on your purchase! With very little effort, you're going to be able to contact large lists of people via SMS. The very first thing you need to do is create a list. A list is just a collection of subscribers that share a common interest. Lists are used to differentiate between multiple groups of subscribers, in case you want to contact different sets of people with different messages.
Once you've created a list, you'll need to fill it with subscribers. To get started with that, in the list view, click "Get HTML Form Code" for your list and copy the code onto your website. Encourage your visitors to use the box to subscribe to your SMS text alerts. As soon as they subscribe, you'll begin building a list of people you can contact. Simply use the "Send SMS" button on your list to message them all at once, instantly!
I created a list but it's empty, how do I add subscribers to my list?
The best way to add subscribers to your list is by using the automatically generated HTML form code that goes on your website. In the list view, click the "Get HTML Form Code" button, then copy the subscribe code to an area of your site that gets a lot of attention. Once the subscribe box is on your site, you just need to get people to fill it out, then in one click they'll be subscribed to your list!
I want to send a few test messages to myself before I add subscribers, how should I do it?
You should first create a new list just for yourself, then click the "View Subscribers" button on that new list. From the subscribers panel, scroll down to the "Add New Subscriber" box and fill it out with your details, then hit submit. Once you've added yourself to that list, simply use the "Send SMS" button to send test messages to yourself. When you're finished, you can simply delete the test list to clean things up.
How do I change the username and password for this admin panel?
Click "Settings" in the menu bar and fill in the first option box. Make sure the username and password is not easy to guess. The information in your admin panel is valuable, you don't want it being stolen or destroyed!
General Questions
Can I change the way the HTML form looks on my page?
Yes, you can, but it requires some basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. When editing the form code, you MUST leave all form elements and input elements as they are. You can reposition them, change any of the CSS elements, or place them wherever you like on your site.
Can I add support for new mobile service providers?
Yes, you are able to manually add or even delete service providers from the system. To add a provider, you will need to know the format of their email gateway that they use to send messages to their customers. If you know the format of their gateway, adding the provider is a very simple process. Just go to the providers area, then fill out the form at the bottom. Most of the time there is no prefix to the format, so most of the time you'll only need to enter a suffix (e.g. @sms.mytelco.com).
What is the "Reply-To" email address and why do I need to set one?
The "Reply-To" address is simply the email address that the SMS text messages will appear to be sent from. This means when a user receives a text message, they will see the sender as the "Reply-To" email address set for that particular list. It's important to have an easily identifiable "Reply-To" address so that the subscriber knows who is sending the message.
What is double-optin? Should I use it?
When a list is set to Double Optin, it means that every user who subscribes to your list through your subscribe form will need to confirm their subscription with a confirmation code that is sent to their phone. Double Optin is suitable in scenarios where you need to protect yourself against being labelled as a spammer. The downside to Double Optin is that sometimes the confirmation messages is not instantly received and not all users might complete the confirmation process.
Some buttons or menus in the admin panel aren't responding, help!
If you are noticing strange behaviour in the admin panel, it is likely that you have turned JavaScript off. JavaScript is essential to many of the admin panel's functions, so please go into your browser settings and turn JavaScript on, or if you've got a script blocker, whitelist this site.
Autoresponder Questions
What exactly is an autoresponder?
An autoresponder is a way of automatically sending predefined messages to new subscribers in a particular order with a particular amount of time between each message. This means that every subscriber will receieve all of the predefined messages from start to finish, so nobody will miss out. With autoresponders, you also don't have to manually send anything to your list as the messages will be sent out automatically. However, if you would like to, you are still able broadcast non-automated messages to your entire list at any time.
What is the "interval" and what should I set it to?
The interval is the time between each message. If you have setup an autoresponder and have 5 messages, you don't want new subscribers to be bombarded with all 5 messages at once, so to break them up you must set an interval time that must pass between each message. If you want one message to be sent each day, you would set the interval time to 24 (for 24 hours).
Can I set a different interval for each message?
No, the interval time is a "per list" setting. It will break up all autoresponder messages in that list by the same amount of time.
I would like the interval to be 30 minutes, is this possible?
No. The interval time must be in whole units of hours. You cannot set it to minutes or parts of an hour. This is also because the script only checks for new messages to send once per hour so that the server is not being overloaded.
I changed "first message instantly" to on, what happens to my current subscribers?
All subscribers that join AFTER you changed the setting will receive their first message instantly. All subscribers that had joined BEFORE you changed the setting and still hadn't received their first message will have to wait out the interval time before it is sent.
What happens to my list if I turn off the autoresponder?
If you were previously using the autoresponder and then turn it off, all automated messages will no longer be sent. Some subscribers may not have received all messages in the autoresponder, they will not receive the messages that they have missed. All subscribers will remain in the list and it can be used as normal, or the autoresponder and be edited/activated again at any time.
SMS Box Questions
Why should I use an SMS Box on my site?
Putting an SMS Box onto your website is a great way to get free promotion and traffic. Millions of SMS messages are sent every day, if you can offer people a way to send messages for free, they're bound to want to use your site. The best part is, you can attach a footer to all outgoing text messages in order to skyrocket your marketing power.
How do I use the footer feature?
The SMS Box footer feature is an extremely powerful marketing tool that lets you attach any text you like to the end of all free SMS messages sent from your site. It's important that you use the feature wisely to provide the best possible experience to your users. Firstly, before you put any SMS boxes on your site, set a footer that you desire (if you like, you can choose not to). It's important to set your footer BEFORE you put the boxes on your site, because the character count of your footer is deducted from the total SMS message length that is allowed to be sent from your box. If you change your footer, you will need to update your box code on your site to reflect the changes in message lenth. If you don't, the SMS Box will report more (or less) characters allowed per message than what it should, preventing some messages from being sent and confusing your users.
Where can I get more box themes?
All SMS Box themes are create using inline CSS. You are free to alter the CSS or the HTML of the box code in any way you like, providing you leave all form, input and javascript elements as they are. You may want to simply change the background image but if you choose, you can completely reformat the box to create your own custom theme.
Is there a limit to how many SMS messages people can send?
No, people can send as many free messages as they like, the only limitation is the amount of characters per message. The maximum amount of characters per free message is 120, but this is reduced if you choose to attach a footer to all outgoing free messages.
Advanced Questions
Is there any way I can test the system without sending text messages to my phone?
Yes, there is. Firstly, create a list and in the "Reply-To" field, enter the email address that you would like to have receive the messages. Then, join your list using any method you wish with the phone number "9999999999". Any messages sent to that number will instead be sent to the "Reply-To" email address. To test the free SMS feature, use the phone number "9999999999" and the messages will be sent to your admin email address, specified in the settings area.
How can I let users unsubscribe to all of my lists at once?
If you want to let users unsubscribe from all of your lists, you just need to direct them to
this page. Rather than using a seperate form for individual lists, they can go to that page at any time to unsubscribe from everything with one click.
I have setup an autoresponder but messages aren't being automatically sent! HELP!
The autoresponder is a script that needs to be run once every hour. The way this is setup on a server is with a Cron Job. A Cron Job is a scheduled task that repeats at certain intervals. When installing this script, you were instructed to setup a Cron Job on your server, if autoresponder messages aren't working, this is most likely because your Cron Job is not setup correctly. The Cron Job should run once every hour and trigger the file "autoresponder.php". An example of the Cron Job command to run this file is "php /home/username/public_html/sms/autoresponder.php". Make sure your Cron Job is setup correctly.
